OUTLIERS

Is the desire to fit in the root of all evil?

Christopher Freiman thinks so:
"Immorality is frequently motivated by a readiness to conform to law and convention in opposition to our own values. In these cases, it’s not that we care too little about others; it’s that we care too much. More specifically, we care too much about how we stack up in the eyes of others."

It hurts, but it rings true to me, and probably to you, too. I've tried to conform to things I didn't believe in because I thought "well, that's just how things are done.".  But maybe there is a case for being the outlier, the one who doesn't fit it. I'd like to think so, and Immanuel Kant thought so as well, which is why I love that bugger so much, even if he’s dead for a couple of years.
Oh - and Seth Godin has been saying the same for years as well! Maybe I just wasn't listening.

The surface of Mars.

I've been reading and enjoying Red Mars, which is a phantastic study in technofuturism and the believe that reason, technology and science can fix everything. It is also a study in how wanting to fit in and making a new idea conform to old ideas can ruin everything. As a friend of mine would say: "This is why we can't have nice things".
One of the great aspects of this book is the authors ability to describe Mars' alien landscapes. The way he talks about Mars makes you think you're standing there, with the same love of the place the first settlers felt. Watch this video made with high-res images of Mars to know what I mean when I say 'alien':
