LET'S BE FWENDS ISSUE #11:

ILLUSIONS

Hey, it's still summer, but for some of us that appears to be an illusion. Ask our swedish friends about that.
To celebrate the difference between our expectations and reality, lets enjoy some situations in which the fabulous pattern recognition machine we call our brain gets it oh so wrong.

Blooms

Let's start with "Blooms 2", a film by John Edmark.
Blooms are 3D-printed objects that animate when rotated and filmed at specific shutter speeds.
The results are impossible to describe (at least for me), so have a look for yourself.

Good advice for bad times

"If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to worry about answers."
~ Proverbs for paranoids—Gravity's Rainbow, Pynchon

Paranoid. But - sadly - true.

Heart-braking or spirit-lifting.

Depending on how you look at life.

Not only our eyes are easily duped.

Our brain's kinda messed up, too.

Listen to this short audio demonstration by WHYY The Pulse on audio signals, prior information and what that does to your brain.

Have you heard of the Shepard Tone?

If you haven't, then click on the image above our here, but promise me not to freak out! I sure did when I first heard this fine audio illusion, and when I read about it, the explanation made no sense at all (but I'm lousy at music).

Speaking of sound ...

Not really an illusion, but consistency is overrated.

That’s it from this edition of Let’s be Fwends. This is not a coin-trick. It really is the bottom of the mail. But of course you knew this already, so please high-five yourself for being such an astute person. 👩🏽‍🔬
